Hours: 5.30pm to 9:00am (including paid rest breaks, hours may vary according to the booking)
Pay: £15.03 per hour (in line with Visitor Operations Duty Manager rate) plus enhanced pay at 1.5x between midnight and 6:00am.

Shift pattern: This role operates on a casual basis where shift availability fluctuates depending on bookings. Typically we expect up to 20 overnight bookings per year, usually on Thursday, Friday or Saturday nights. As a casual team member, you’ll have the flexibility to choose the shifts that suit your schedule, with no obligation to work every week. A rota of available shifts is usually shared at least one month in advance, giving you plenty of time to let us know your availability.
If of interest, additional work may be available within the Visitor Operations (Customer Service) team during daytime school holidays and weekends, where there may be no sleepover bookings. This is subject to team allocation.

The Charity runs Winchester Science Centre - a vibrant, hands-on experience for young children. The Role
We are looking for enthusiastic and reliable individuals to join us as an Overnight Event Duty Manager, supporting our hugely popular Sleepover events.
Our Sleepover events are hugely popular, providing fun, memorable and safe overnight experiences for schools, families and groups. As an Overnight Event Duty Manager, you will take the lead in overseeing the full overnight operation of Winchester Science Centre during these events.
You will act as the main point of contact for visitors and staff, ensuring smooth event delivery, highquality customer service and effective building management throughout the night. Typical shifts run from 5:00pm to 9:00am, with some flexibility depending on the booking.
You will have access to support from an on call Senior Management Team member via the in case of emergency callout procedure. Full training will be provided, including the opportunity to shadow an experienced Duty Manager.
This role will oversee the Overnight Sleepover Event Staff (Casual) during shifts, with added responsibilities for leadership, decisionmaking and building management.
Key Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Event Leadership & Visitor Experience
- Act as the primary point of contact for all visitors during the event, providing a warm welcome and consistently excellent customer service.
- Leading evening safety breafings
- Lead and support Overnight Sleepover Event Staff, ensuring duties are completed effectively and collaboratively.
- Oversee event setup, delivery and pack down.
Building & Operational Management
- Take full responsibility for managing the Centre overnight, including unlocking, locking and general building operations.
- Switch exhibits on/off and oversee exhibit operational readiness.
- Operate the planetarium pre recorded film shows (full training provided), including basic troubleshooting.
- Conduct building checks throughout the night, ensuring safety, cleanliness and smooth running of all spaces.
- Act as the designated Fire Safety Manager while on site, following emergency and evacuation procedures if required.
Health, Safety & Safeguarding
- Ensure safeguarding procedures are implemented and followed by all staff.
- Carry out routine health and safety checks, addressing or escalating any issues promptly.
- Monitor visitor wellbeing throughout the night, taking appropriate action when needed.
Front of House & Retail Support
- Support admissions, bar or retail operations where required, including basic till and refund processes.
About You
- Full training will be provided — you do not need to already have this knowledge to apply.
- You will gain or build confidence in the following areas:
- Basic operation and troubleshooting of planetarium systems.
- Front-of-house systems and tills, including problem-solving and issuing refunds.
- Setting up and shutting down Centre exhibits.
- Fire evacuation and emergency procedures.
- First aid (training provided).
- Safeguarding awareness and responsible decision-making.
- Building operations including lighting, alarms and access control.
- The overnight incaseofemergency call-out escalation process.
- (Optional future development) SIA Door Supervisor training.

- Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate comfortably with children, families and group leaders.
- Sound judgement and the ability to make decisions when faced with unexpected situations.
- The ability to remain awake, alert and responsible for the full duration of the shift.
- A proactive and supportive approach to teamwork, with the ability to work independently when needed.
